Webinar On Decoding Biological Data : 13/02/2021

The Department of Microbiology, Nehru Arts and Science College has organized DBT – STAR college scheme sponsored Webinar on “Decoding Biological Data” on 13/02/2021. The program was inaugurated with the welcome address by Dr. R. Vijayaraghavan, Head of the Department, Department of Microbiology, NASC. The presidential address of the program was delivered by Dr. B. Anirudhan, Principal, Nehru Arts and Science College. Technical Session was initiated with the talk by Dr. B. Anandkumar, Scientific Officer-E, Corrosion Science and Technology Division, Homi-Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam. Following the technical session and presentation by the resource person, the session was concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. T.H. Sukirtha.

A great deal of experimental data generated by scientists is now stored online in publicly available databases. Because of this, it can now be used (‘interrogated’) in large biological studies to uncover clues about the functions of genes, other genetic components, proteins, and cell pathways that are important in cancers and other diseases. This process of finding out data is called data mining. Bioinformaticians are scientists who specialise in developing and using specialist software tools to do just this; to analyse and interpret combinations of big data sets generated in biological studies.

The creation of new analysis tools for working with this type of data is therefore becoming increasingly important. It allows scientists to fully make use of the information available, and allows them to compare and analyse data generated from different sources. It can be used to find new links between genes and disease that may be responsible for diseases such as cancer. Armed with this information we can work towards the development of personalised screening tools such as blood tests, or specific treatment regimens that would increase the chances of an individual responding to a given cancer therapy. Bioinformatics is a therefore a cornerstone of personalised medicine – allowing large data sets to be used to customise medical treatment

The outcome of the Event

A student completing a major in Bioinformatics shall be able to apply: knowledge and awareness of the basic principles and concepts of biology, computer science and mathematics. Existing software effectively to extract information from large databases and to use this information in computer modelling.

Outreach Programme On “Self Defending Training To School Girls”

Convener-:Dr. R. Vijayaraghavan

Resource Person-:M. Muniyasamy, Physical Director, KPRCAS, Coimbatore

Self-defending training will be important to girls from classes 6 to 12 studying students. To empower the girls students and also build self-confidence so that they can contribute meaningfully to their own development, shape their own destiny and capacity enhancement through self-defence training. Hands-on training were conducted on 22.01.2021. Students from St. Ann’S Matriculation High. Sec. School, Coimbatore utilized the session. Mr. M. Muniyasamy, Physical Director, KPRCAS, Coimbatore begun the session by explaining about the Introduction and Demo of Adimurai, Silambam, Sword training, Kalari, Gymnastics etc.

The outcome of the Event

Learned the Girl Students how to defend against any type of physical assault.
