The Department of Costume Design and Fashion organized Gender Equity Programme “Equality and Legal Women Rights” on 09.07.2024 for 91 Participants and Adv. N Sindhuja, B. S., LLB, Lawyer in District Court, Coimbatore acted as the resource person. She explained about the rights of women in India in both the Constitutional Rights and Legal Rights. She pointed out how society still tends to perceive women as inferior, even though fundamental rights are enjoyed by all citizens equally, regardless of gender. She deliberated on the details of the provisions listed in the Domestic Violence Act, 2005 and the Protection of Children against Sexual Offences Act, 2012.
Outcome of the Event: The program helped the students understand high prevalence of violence against women, unequal distribution of unpaid domestic and care work, gender-biased sex selection, gender pay and income gap, and underrepresentation of women in decision-making positions.
